Blackberry Jam- A people traffic jam that occurrs in subway tunnels and bus stations. Caused by inconsiderate workaholics walking too slow while their noses are glued to their Blackberry device.

This is one of my biggest pet peeves. Whether it is at a bus station, walking to class, or in line at Target, IT IS JUST PLAIN RUDE. There are always the “Blackberry Jamer’s” at the grocery store, blocking off a whole aisle. They act like they are so much more important than everyone else. It drives me crazy. Learn how to be a respectful and considerate ADULT. Grow up!

Coming out of my shell :] September 25, 2008

diffident \DIF-uh-dunt; -dent\, adjective:
1. Lacking self-confidence; distrustful of one’s own powers; timid; bashful.
2. Characterized by modest reserve; unassertive.

If you were to ask me a few months ago, I would have definately agreed that I was diffident. I was very shy, and would not approach others unless they approached me first. I was reserved and kept to myself almost all the time. I really think that college has helped me change that. Living in the dorms, you are forced to be around people 24/7. It gets old sometimes, but it really forces you to meet people and embrace the situation of college. I believe I have come out of my shell in the short time I have been here, and I am a much more social person that I was a few months ago!

Oh, how we love the UP winters … September 18, 2008

Gelid (adj.)- extremely cold; icy.

All of us freshmen, whether native to the Upper Peninsula or not, know how the winter seasons are at Northern: cold and snowy. Many people complain about this season, and tend to hibernate in their dorms, sipping hot cocoa and watching television. I live for winter. You are now probably assuming that I snowboard or ski. You are wrong. I have never gone skiing or snowboarding in my life. I simply love the beauty of winter. I find it peaceful and inspiring. I cannot wait to take walks along Lake Superior, and gaze over the glistening, gelid waters. Everything is calm in the winter. I guess that’s why Northern is my new home.

Bling Bling. Hey, can someone grab the phone? September 11, 2008

Gimcrack (adj)- Tastelessly showy; cheap; gaudy.

While browsing through former “word of the day” terms on dictionary.com, I came across gimcrack. I had never heard of this word before, but I instantly fell in love with the way it sound. In today’s world, the perfect representation of a gimcrack object would be “bling-bling.” Most people who wear this gimcrack jewelry cannot afford real diamonds, so the gigantic necklaces look distastful and fake. Along in this category are “grills”, a row of fake teeth replaced by diamonds or a metallic material. There is no real purpose or use for these objects, but to make the owner look absolutely ridiculous.
